In January of 2021, I completed my 3,000 square foot mural at the 5th and Market Street, Independence Hall Subway station. As the name confirms, the station delivers travellers, both local and international, to the most important historic district in the country.
After receiving the commission in September 2019, the design, fabrication and installation took about a year and a half. It was received with great acclaim and set a new standard for public art in Philadelphia. An exhibition at the Woodmere Art Museum, “History in Motion: Tom Judd’s subway mural” followed in the Spring of 2021, including a 55 page catalog.
It has been an honor and privilege to contribute to Philadelphia’s public art and cultural environment in this way.

“Judd’s mural is an important addition to the rich landscape of public art in Philadelphia, and
its prominent location and scale prompt us to slow down and consider what the artist has to say. The visual qualities of the mural together with Judd’s decisions about subject matter are especially meaningful in the current moment, as we confront a shared American history that has brought widespread acknowledgement of the need for greater civic enlightenment as a means to cultural change.”
