ALTERED STATES

“ALTERED STATES is a series that is made up of and inspired by other people’s photographs/memories. The work is reductive in its subject matter and in medium. Enlarged anonymous photographs combined with substrates of color and simple patterns. Although painting is Judd’s fundamental choice for two dimensional works, these are un-painterly. They are boiled down to just enough information to get the point across. But what is the point? They are stark in some ways, but also invite the viewer in for a conversation. There are different messages presenting themselves; something about communal memory, something about growing up in white America, lost in the suburbs. They are a little heartbreaking, a little sad, like our memories.”
